MLB MOCK DRAFT ROUNDUP 3.0

We’re a little more than a week away from the big event, so what better time to check in on what prognosticators think than now. Even on the less reputable websites that feel more like educated dart throws, a lot of people are leaning towards offense when it comes to putting someone on the Phillies. When the people who sound like they know what they’re talking about give their thoughts, again, there is very little pitching being talked about.

Reminder that the Phillies are picking at the bottom of each round again since, you know, they’re good now!

MLB Pipeline - Tommy White, 3B - LSU

The Phillies have taken high schoolers in the first round four years in a row, but could this year break the streak? A spirited conversation over a college bat like White vs. high school hitters like [Theo] Gillen and [Kellon] Lindsey or a prep arm like [Kash] Mayfield or [Braylon] Doughty will likely take place.

ESPN - Dakota Jordan, OF - Mississippi State

I love my pick here. Jordan is a great athlete who might have been downgraded while concentrating on football at Mississippi State. He has given that up and could be as good as anyone taken near him — making him a good value pick for me late in our draft. Can’t say the same about any of Dave’s late ones.

CBS Sports - Slade Caldwell, OF - Valley View HS (Arz.)

A year ago, the Phillies landed the steal of the draft in Aidan Miller at No. 27. Miller and Caldwell are not all that similar — Miller is a power threat likely to settle in at third base, Caldwell is a slash-and-dash burner — but the Phillies have really leaned into the high school ranks the last few years, and Caldwell is the highest-upside high school position player still available in our mock draft, the same way Miller was the highest-upside high school position player still available when Philadelphia’s first-round pick rolled around last summer.

Baseball America - Ryan Sloan, RHP - York HS (Ill.)

The Phillies are another team linked with Kash Mayfield, but he’s not on the board in this scenario. Ryan Sloan is, and a few weeks ago there was some chatter that he could go off the board as high as 15-20, so it’s hard to imagine him staying on the board much longer. Philadelphia is one of the teams who will take a shot on a high school arm in the first round. Brody Brecht could make sense if he’s still on the board.
