YANKEES' CHANCES OF SIGNING JUAN SOTO TO MIDSEASON EXTENSION APPEAR TO HAVE TAKEN A HIT

The New York Yankees have had an interesting season so far, to say the least, with the team going from being extremely dominant to looking overrated. New York has gone 2-8 over its last 10 games overall and they have fallen from the top spot within the American League East. Currently, the Yankees hold a record of 54-35, good for second place in the division.

Injuries have taken a toll on this team but the front office has also built it up well to withstand different situations along the way. However, the Yankees will need to be careful in how the season ends as one of their best players is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the year.

Star outfielder Juan Soto will be a free agent once the season ends and he is expected to receive a massive, possibly historic contract on the open market. New York traded for Soto last offseason with the hope of re-signing him to a long-term contract but nothing has come to fruition yet. Originally, Soto and his representation, Scott Boras, seemed open to the idea of an extension with the Yankees during the season. But that has seemingly taken a hit and everything is pointing to him hitting free agency this coming winter.

Soto recently gave some comments about his upcoming free agency, suggesting that he would let Boras take control over the offseason.

"We will see. In the offseason we will figure it out. I'll let [agent Scott Boras] do his thing. We're going to see."

In addition to the Yankees, teams like the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers may look to get involved in the bidding. Soto is one of the youngest stars in baseball so we could see a sky-high bidding war for his services.

Despite the recent comments from Soto, he has previously talked about his excellent experience with the Yankees so far. Soto has seemed to enjoy his time in the Bronx which could help push the Yankees forward in their pursuit to retain him this winter.

"I love it here, it's a great city, it's an unbelievable group in there,'' Soto said. "I'm excited. I'm more than happy where I am right now."It's just a great vibe we have in there.''

On the year, the star outfielder has hit .300 with 21 home runs and 63 runs batted in over 85 games. He has helped transform the Yankees offense into one of the more lethal units around baseball so New York should do whatever they can to keep him around long-term. This will all be played out in a few months but the Soto sweepstakes should be similar to a movie.
