MIKE MACDONALD ALREADY REWRITING SEAHAWKS FRANCHISE HISTORY BOOKS

The Seattle Seahawks had to dig deep to pull off a 23-20 overtime win over the New England Patriots. Mike Macdonald’s group is now 2-0 and atop the NFC West in this early portion of the 2024 NFL season.

There was much anticipation and excitement surrounding the arrival of the former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator, and it didn’t take long for him to rewrite Seattle’s history books.

Macdonald is the first Seahawks head coach to start his first season 2-0 in Seattle. Granted, the Seahawks haven’t had many head coaches in its history (relative to some other teams), but it’s still a big deal:

Jack Patera (1976): 0-2

Chuck Knox (1983): 1-1

Tom Flores (1992): 0-2

Dennis Erickson (1995): 0-2

Mike Holmgren (1999): 1-1

Jim Mora (2009): 1-1

Pete Carroll (2010): 1-1

Mike Macdonald (2024): 2-0

There is one caveat to this statistic. When Jack Patera was fired in the strike-shortened 1982 season, Mike McCormack became the interim coach upon the season restarting. Seattle won its first two games under McCormack, then lost three of the last five and missed the playoffs. Technically speaking, McCormack is the first Seahawks HC to go 2-0 in his first season, but he obviously didn’t turn the interim role into a permanent job.

It’s a great start to the Macdonald era, but the hope is that greater things are yet to come.
